was a smashing hit, according to the many emails I have received since then about how good it was, as well as the TURNOUT — over 70 people made it: professors, staff members, students from every class year, majors, interested community members. It was really awesome to see so many people at Bucknell interested in Classics, and Professor Camp did not disappoint. He traced the development of Athenian democracy in the Athenian Agora from Solon to Perikles; his was basically the most lucid yet concise overview of Athenian political history I have ever heard in less than an hour. Thanks to all for coming and enjoying the event!
Hey everybody: Don’t forget the Classics Pizza Party on Tuesday afternoon from 430-6 in the traditional Reading Room at Bertrand Library! Be there or be completely SQUARE!
You don’t have to be a bona fide MAJOR to come to the party! Even if you aren’t a minor and are just INTERESTED in the Classics department, come anyway and let’s chat!
We had a great lecture and visit here in the Classics department by Erwin Cook, Professor of Classics from Trinity University in San Antonio (Sept 24). He spoke about myth patterns in common between the Odyssey and the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, and he made a very convincing case for the latter informing the former. The turnout was high, and we expect an even greater number to attend our exciting upcoming talk on ancient Athenian democracy by the world-renowned archaeologist and Director of the Athenian Agora Excavations, John McK. Camp II. He will be talking to the Bucknell community on October 22, at 7pm, in Trout Auditorium. Be there, or BE SQUARE! There will be loads of breathtaking images, as usual, coupled with Dr. Camp’s characteristically insightful commentary, gleaned from over 40 years of consistent excavation experience in the heart of ancient Athens. This is not an event to be missed…….
Classes are now in session at Bucknell University, and there are lots to choose from this term in Classics! Just for fun, here is a partial list of great courses we have on the slate for this year:
